Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia (Vol. 2) lists:
Jno. Portlock (to Kentucky) in the year 1786.

Volume 1 lists:

"List of Wolf scalps,.....1789, December, to John Portlock and Lev (?) Nicholas; 1790, December, to William Portlock, William M. Jordan and Sylvanus Odle;..."

Bath County, Virginia Order Book No. 7273, Pt. 1, page 317 Mar 1797
" On motion of John Portlock to keep an Ordinary at his house in this county is granted him he having complied with the law."

The following was copied by Mrs. Eva Portlock Wright from a slip of paper which was loaned to her from Mrs. Edna Sell Stithem. The slip of paper was found in the Bible of Thomas S. Portlock, which in 1960 was owned by Mrs. Stithem of Loma Linda, California.

"To the Worshiful the Court of Bath County;
James Petijohn...........................Humbly wisheth,
THAT John Portlock.....................stands indebted to him in Three pounds, twelve shillings, due by note under seal and refuseth payment, wherefore your petitioner pray judgement against him for same with interest and costs, and shall pray, etc.
A copy Teste Charles Cameron Clk."

According to Eva Portlock Wright's research the 1810 Federal Census for Cumberland County, Kentucky lists John Portlock with 2 girls between the ages of 16 and 26 and 1 slave. However after finding a transcription of the census online John did not have any slaves; the column with that '1' is for "deaths in family in previous year." Copied the original census for 1810, John did not have any slaves and he had two girls aged 16-26; 1 person in the household had died in the previous year. On the 1820 census for Adair County, Kentucky, John had 1 female aged 16-26 (ie. born 1794-1804).

Church minutes of Casey's Fork Baptist Church (organized 1802), near Marrowbone, Cumberland County, Kentucky list:
16 Sep 1820 "Brother Portlock and Sister Portlock, failing to attend meeting for several months, the Church thinks it proper to cite them to on 3rd Saturday of October and render their cause of nonattendance."
21 Oct 1820 "Called for reference the non-attendance of Brother and Sister Portlock to their Church, meeting took up and the Brother and Sister made such satisfaction that it is satisfactory with the Brethern."
21 Jul 1821 "Appointed Brethern George King and John Portlock to bear the Church letter to the Stockton's Valley Association which meets at Town Creek, White County, Tenn."
Research
Possibly a son of Jonathan and Mary (Bevan) Portlock.

Not located in the 1790 or 1800 census, 18 August 2002.
Notes for Sarah/Sary (Spouse 1)
Birthdate estimated between 16 and 21 years at marriage. This would make Sarah between 29 and 35 at Moses' birth (if he was the youngest). The 1810 Federal Census for Cumberland County, Kentucky lists John Portlock with 2 girls between the ages of 16 and 26. There is room for these two girls if they are older than Barnet or if John or Sarah had children in a previous marriage. On the 1820 census for Adair County, Kentucky John has one female aged 16-26 (ie. born 1794-1804). Also the one female in this household aged over 45 was born before 1775. Sarah's estimated date of birth has been changed to reflect that. Being that she was born before 1775, she was at least 16 at marriage.
