| Notes for William Portlock |
"W. A. Portlock, who deliberately shot John Andreas in the back of the head and killed him some two weeks ago, has been indicted for murder in the first degree at Burlington, Ia. Portlock attempted suicide at the time and has since been under the care of physicians. He has been taken to jail to await trial." [Bismark Daily Tribune, Bismark, North Dakota, Saturday 14 November 1891, page 1 column 5, Ancestry.com Newspaper Collection, Image 1, accessed 26 September 2003]
"W. A. Portlock, convicted of the murder of James Andreas, tells a strange story. He says some time before the murder he became financially embarrassed and his wife borrowed for him some money from Andreas. The day before the murder she confessed that the price she paid was her virtue. Portlock says he soothed her. Then everything faded from his sight and he only regained consciousness when he was taken to the hospital after the murder and attempted suicide. He claims to know nothing of the tragedy and that he must have been insane at the time. Portlock was taken to prison to serve an eight-year sentence." |
