Notes for William P. Portlock
1879 Biography:

"William O. Portlock was born in Shelby County, Indiana, April 6, 1840, and is the son of the late Dr. Portlock. His parents brought him to this county when but an infant. Married May 1, 1861, to Adelaide Hickey, and they have 10 children, of whom 5 are living, viz: Ida, Martha, Lucy, Mary, and Squire. Mr. Portlock a farmer on Section 20, Farmers Township, and owns 200 acres of very good land."

Obituary:

"Wm. P. Portlock passes away. Propoetor of Palace Hotel succumbs to short illness late Saturday afternoon. William P. Portlock who for the past 12 years has been propietor of the Palace Hotel on S. Seminary Street, passed away after a short illness at 4 o'clcok on Sat. afternoon. Deceased had been in failing health for several weeks but his condition was not thought serious; death, therefore, came as a shock to his family and friends. Deceased was born in Shelby County, Ind., on April 6, 1840, and at the age of 6 months was brought to Table Grove, Ill., bu his parents. At the latter place he spent his boyhood and young manhood, coming to Galesburg sixteen years ago to make his home.

His wife Adelaide Hickey, died several years ago, leaving 5 children, four daughters and one son who are as follows: Ida, Martha, Louis, Mary, and Squire. Deceased was a member of the order of Masons and of the order of Woomen at Table Grove. He was also a member of the local First Methodist Episcopal Church."

"William P. Portlock, of Galesburg, Ill., passed away t his home in that city. He was a brother of James Portlock of this city. The Galesburg Republican-Register has the following account of his death and funeral services:

William P. Portlock for nearly 15 years propietor of the Palace Hotel in this (Galesburg, Ill.) city died Sat. afternoon at 4 o'clock. Mr. Portlock had been ill only a few days and although his recovery was confidently expected, he lost strength and succumbed to heart failure. Mr. Portlock had been a familiar figure in Galesburg and among those with whom he came in personal contact was especially known for his honesty and generosity. He was a member and one of the most faithful attendants of the Methodist Church of this city. After the funeral the body was taken on the 10 o'clock train to Table Grove and place besides that of his wife, who passed away in galesburg 11 years ago. The services were in charge of the Modern Woodmen. The deceased came to Illinois and located in Fulton County, when a child, and there he lived until about 15 years ago when he moved to Galesburg. Mr. Portlock's birthplace was Indiana, and he was born April 6, 1840."
