I can't believe it has been almost three years since I last updated this page. I do not have any major updates to report but The Great Murder Mystery has been solved. Check below to find out who killed James Andrews.
I am in the process of entering all Portlocks from the 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 census. By the next update, all of these census entries will have been entered.
If this page has helped you, please let me know. If you would like to know what sources I have used, please just ask. I am always happy to help.

15 December 2002 Update
On 10 August 2002, we (my husband, son, and I) drove to Clarinda, Iowa and met cousins Bill and Dorothy Horton. Dorothy has the research of George H. Taylor. With us, we took a computer, scanner, copy machine and several reams of paper. After 4 hours of almost constant work (we did stop for a wonderful barbeque lunch prepared by Bill) we had completed the job. Needless to say it was well worth the time and effort and I am greatly indebted to Dorothy for sharing Georges research with me. Within this webpage you will find all kinds of references to the research accumulated by George. I have tried to add and update dates, places, events, and have transcribed some of the data verbatim. As time goes on, I will continue my effort at transcribing. George cited his sources and organized his papers in such a way that things are easy to find and corroborate. George and I would have gotten along famously! This update is dedicated to all the hard work done by George H. Taylor in keeping a record of our Portlock heritage.
Due to the huge amounts of research collected by George and copied by me, I would greatly appreciate it if you do not ask for copies. The most important documents (like the Bible pages) will eventually be scanned and placed on the webpage for all to see. Thank you.
I also took the time this fall and transcribed many documents from my own files.
John [our common ancestor]. In Georges research are copies (actual copies!) of Thomas Portlocks Bible. Along with Johns pension, this is a contemporary source for Johns death, and as far as I am aware the only contemporary source for Sarahs death. Please be careful if you are using the transcribed copy published by the Old Fort Log, December 1975. This was NOT an exact transcription. As an example, in this record Johns middle name is listed as Benjamin. John is not listed with a middle name in the Bible and I cannot find any evidence that he even had a middle initial. If you have such a document, I would appreciate having a copy.

The Great Murder Mystery Has Been Solved!
I found the following entry on RootsWeb.
"W. A. Portlock, who deliberately shot John Andreas in the back of the head and killed him some two weeks ago, has been indicted for murder in the first degree at Burlington, IA. Portlock attempted suicide at the time and has since been under the care of physicians. He has been taken to jail to await trial." [Bismark Daily Tribune, Bismark, North Dakota, Saturday 14 November 1891, page 1 column 5, Ancestry.com Newspaper Collection, Image 1, accessed 26 September 2003]
"W. A. Portlock, convicted of the murder of James Andreas, tells a strange story. He says some time before the murder he became financially embarrassed and his wife borrowed for him some money from Andreas. The day before the murder she confessed that the price she paid was her virtue. Portlock says he soothed her. Then everything faded from his sight and he only regained consciousness when he was taken to the hospital after the murder and attempted suicide. He claims to know nothing of the tragedy and that he must have been insane at the time. Portlock was taken to prison to serve an eight-year sentence."[Bismark Daily Tribune, Bismark, North Dakota, 21 February 1892, page 1 column 4, Ancestry.com Newspaper Collection, Image 1, accessed 26 September 2003]
W. A. Portlock is William Portlock born in 1853 to Warren and Mary (Zion) Portlock. Does anyone know what happened to William? When and where did he die?
If you have any clues on the above Unknowns, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you!
Did you find an error or have an addition? Please email me. Do you have a picture, letter, Bible record, deed...etc., that you would be willing to share. I am always looking for "new" data.
For privacy reasons, no one born after 1905 is included (unless they died before 1920).
